ABOUT THE PROJECT
It focuses on improving synergies between the Basel, Rotterdam and Stockholm Conventions (BRS), as well as the former Strategic Approach to International Chemicals Management (SAICM), now Global Framework on Chemicals (GFC), helping institutions work more efficiently through better coordination, harmonized procedures, stronger data systems, and increased institutional capacities. The Project assists in preparation of documents for ratification of Minamata convention.
The goal of the project is to contribute to the protection of human health and the environment while supporting Bosnia and Herzegovina in aligning with international environmental obligations and best practices.
Key Project Areas
- Policy Support and Coordination –Strengthening institutional cooperation through improved procedures, clearer responsibilities, and establishment of a national coordination mechanism for BRS implementation.
- Minamata Convention Integration –Supporting the process of accession and alignment of the Minamata Convention with existing national chemicals and waste management frameworks.
- Information Systems and Reporting – Improving data management, reporting systems, and planning for a joint information system to support convention obligations.
- Capacity Building and Awareness Raising – Enhancing institutional capacities through assessments, targeted trainings, stakeholder workshops, and technical support.
Long-Term Impact
The project helps Bosnia and Herzegovina build a more integrated national system for chemicals and waste governance. It strengthens cooperation among institutions, improves reporting and compliance, and supports sustainable environmental management in line with international conventions.
